The Masters start the lesson for the 30-somethings

3rd Annual Tornado Masters Classic
There is a reason why they call this race a "Masters Classic", that's
because it is only open to runners 40 and over. Well, WVOutside
showed up to crash the party. We thought we would sneak
two 30-somethings into the crowd to beat-up on these aging veterans of
pavement pounding. Sounds good on paper, but the seasoned runners at
the Toranado Matsers Classic proceeded to blow away the younger
intruders. To add insult to injury, the young cheaters had to pay a
$12 fine (masters call it an entry fee) for their antics, but
you should see the nice new t-shirts they're wearing.

Tom Langley strides to a victory
|
The run was basically an out-and-back 5K course that folowed the banks
of the New Creek. The weather was beautiful and after 17.44 minutes
Tom Langan was the first master to cross the line, leaving the
breathless 30-somethings way back. Dennis Albright chased Tom most of
the way but crossed the line 10 seconds later to take 2nd overall.
The first woman to finish was Mary Siemen, who set a women's masters
course record in 21.02.
Finally, last is certainly not least. Fred Poland completed the 5K
at a modest pace to finish as the only over 60 competitor. A pretty
nice morning stride for a man whose young-at-heart age of 86 makes our
30-somethings wonder if they have another half-century of racing left!

Mary Siemen about to finish a Women's Masters course record

Don't miss the all-ages July 4th race in Keyser. It follows the same
flat course along the scenic New Creek that ensures some really nice
times and maybe a PR or two.
