The Elizabeth-Wirt Volunteer Fire Department Firecracker 5K kicked off at 8:30 Saturday morning with very mild temperatures. Sixty-three runners and walkers meandered the streets of Elizabeth on this cool morning in search of PR.

In the run, it was West Union's Daniel Edgell leading virtually from start-to-finish with an outstanding time of 15:52. This was only Edgell's second race of the year. Josh Weekley held second from beginning to end but had to fight off a very stiff challenge from Randy Gibbs who ran on Weekley's shoulder from the time the gun sounded to the time they crossed the finish line.

In the women's division, it was Williamstown High School standout Kristin Daugherty crossing the line first, with nearly a full minute to spare over second place Connie Hurst.

The walk division saw Parkersburg's John Mike Nichols take nearly a minute and a half victory over runner-up William Cunningham. On the women's side, it was Martha Marks edging Darlene Burke by only 19 seconds in the closest 1-2 finish of the day.

This race continues to be one of the best small races in the state. The course is exceptionally well-marked with bright orange arrows guiding the runners, and in the event that the arrows are missed, there is someone manning each turn to point the racers in the right direction. After the race, the competitors were treated to all the water, Gatorade, and fruit they wanted while waiting a surprisingly short time for the awards ceremony to begin.

Thanks go out to Jerry and Kathy Hopkins for putting on an excellent event and for providing a copy of the results and to Mike Taylor helping get the results tabulated so quickly.
