The runners take off at the start
What an incredibly gorgeous day it ways for a race. Mother Nature could not have provided better weather, and folks were certainly happy about that. The Penn State Fayette 5K Run & Walk benefitted the Scholarship Fund for students having financial need, and the campus Alumni Society Student Award. This year, 200 participants showed up on campus in the bright sunshine, and cool breeze ready to race. With the music pumping, they signed up and milled around until race time.

The course was a rolling, 4 loop trek around the campus. SERJ lined everyone up, and then it was time to get hoofin'.

Cruising out to the front of the pack fast was Uniontown native, Eddie Filcheck(# 698). Filckeck looked over his shoulder for a follower, but wound up taking 1st with no worries with a time of 17:15.

Gregory Bobich(17:26), of West Newton, PA kept about a 20 second lead over Kevin Lieb to take 2nd overall. Lieb finished a respectable 3rd in the 5K with a time of 17:44.

The ladies kept things spread out as well. Overall Female Winner of the 2000 John Woodruff 5K among others, Gretchen Wood, a Uniontown native, has been running very strong this year in the Western Pennsylvania area. With a fast time of 20:12, Wood captured 1st for the women.

Karen Mizikar of Mt. Pleasant, PA, kept up her strong pace to capture 2nd in 20 minutes and 29 seconds. Angie Garlowich (21:07), kicked over the line for 3rd.

Plenty of walkers out on a nice Saturday in Uniontown
In the 5K Walk, there was some tough competition as there always is in PA. Jamie Brooks, of Connesville, PA is certainly a familiar face in the area. With many, many wins under her belt, Jamie has made quite a reputation for herself in the PA Race Walking World. Not only did Brooks take home the 1st place plaque for the women, but she also finished 5th overall in the walk with a great time of 28:50.

Carolyn Brooks(31:38), snagged 2nd for the ladies, and Kathy Paes (32:40), kept up her strides for 3rd.

As always, Steve Bence was on top of his game, finishing 1st overall in the walk in an awesome 26:05. Thomas Starkey(26:43), took home 2nd, and Ken James (27:30), finished a strong 3rd.

After the race, free hot dogs were scarfed down fast, and everyone hung around to enjoy some sun, and oldies tunes. It was a nice day, and thanks to the folks at Penn State, it was a fun one as well.
Special thanks to: SERJ Racing Services for the results, and to Cheryl Duncan & Jes Hutson for their hospitality.
