The annual "Miles for Mission 5k" took place in Gary Saturday morning with almost ideal running conditions greeting the participants. The gun sounded at 9AM sharp, and the runners quickly disappeared into the fog. They would face an out and back course which went gradually uphill all the way to the turn around. It wasn't a steep hill, but as the race director told one participant before the race, "You'll notice it by the time you've done a mile and a half." Fortunately, what goes up must come down, so the return trip was quite a bit easier and allowed many runners to run the second half of the race faster than the first.

Steve Crowder of Fincastle, VA, didn't seem to mind the course at all, as he grabbed an early lead and never looked back en route to victory in a time of 16:05. Last year's third place finisher, Jimmy Miller of Bluefield, moved up a spot from the previous year and took second in 19:10. Miller was also the Men's Masters winner. Rounding out the top three was Ray Mathey, who covered the course in 20:44

On the women's side, Gerry Murray was very surprised to find herself being the only female in the race. Not letting that fact or a troubling heel spur deter her, she completed the course in 35:37, picking up the overall women's win and finishing first in the Female Masters category

After the race, the sun emerged from the fog, and everyone enjoyed some good food and beverages, as well as some very nice door prizes. Overall winners received gift certificates and age group winners took home medals. Most importantly, everyone had a great time and raised some money for a very good cause.
