What: This MTB race was hatched back in 1989 (when mountain bike racing was just plain fun) and has grown dramatically, even to Virginia's largest race ever (twice!).

In the past, it has been a rough and rugged affair, that seems like it climbs all the way around the constantly evolving 7 mile lap. In the past, the event has been accentuated by pond jumping exhibitions and log pulls. 1998 marked the first course using a the Kaylor's Knob ridge trail, creating a killer point-to-point adventure (the only best way to race!). This was an entirely technical wonder. So gloriously technical, in fact, that most of Dragon's Back looked like freeway in comparison. Thomas Jenkins, Mike Carpenter, Jamie Keehner, and a host of hard-working, hard-riding mountain bikers are responsible (and to BLAME) for this fabulous restoration project.

THE COURSE: Massanutten fires up a return of the Virginia State Championship downhill on the infamous World Cup course. You may remember this one from '98, and hope you saw the world cup in '97. Get your long-travel on and plummet down the killer course.

The XC course is the same 21 miles (11 for beginners) of great riding that it was in 2000 while the XXC course includes some sweet new trails.

* Please Note: that the cross country course is not at the ski lodge, but on the completely other side of the mountain on the western slope (the ski slope is eastern). The downhill course is at the ski resort, with all its sumptuous amenities.
