Come ride for the fun of it!
"Want a safe, wholesome place to bike with your family?  Welcome to our inaugural Family Bicycle Tour of the beautiful hills surrounding Elkins, West Virginia!

Elkins lies in the center of a most scenic and idyllic venue for bicycling. Although the town is in the middle of the hilly Appalachian Mountains, there are many enjoyable loop rides throughout the Tygart River Valley, where the terrain is gently rolling.

The Tour's riding loops of 35-45 miles afford many advantages for families over point to point rides offered elsewhere:

  • same lodging every night, no tents to pitch
  • access to your auto every night
  • flexibility...take a day off and not lose the tour
  • no baggage transport, nor hauling weighty gear on your bike
  • no long bus rides to or from the start/end of the tour
  • daytime BABYSITTING at the Y so young parents can bike during the day
  • inside parking nightly for bikes
In addition to the longer loops for those who enjoy a full day of exercise, we will also offer easy 10 mile rides each day.  These rides will be segments of the Allegheny Rail-Trail and the West Fork Trail, which are free of auto traffic and especially suited for children.

Elkins has many amenities for such a small town and is extremely walkable so that you can amble to many restaurants, stores, a library, a large city park, and a vibrant YMCA with pool and gym.  We are also the home of Davis and Elkins College, whose on campus Inn and restaurant is within 1/3 mile of our daily bike start.

While staying in Elkins, you may want to ride one of four tourist railroads in the area, one of which comes through town.  These train rides will take you deep into the Monongahela forest where you may even see a bear!

If you like to fish, the "Mon" has some of the best and clearest trout streams in the country.  One of our bike rides will visit the trout hatchery from which these rivers are stocked.

The Randolph Community Arts Center is also near our daily start and will probably have a free noon concert on 6-28 for those who come, but don't ride. This exciting facility usually has an exhibit of art, which all riders should try to see.
