Course

  • 1.5-mile Downstream Swim from Stone Cliff to Dun Glen (approximate swim time is 20-40 min.)
  • 7-mile trail Run from Dun Glen to ACE
  • 10-mile mountain Bike Loop Around ACE Facility

The trek begins upstream of the historic town of Thurmond where the racers will swim 1.5 miles in the ancient New River, including a small class 1 rapid. At the old site of the once famous Dun Glen Hotel, the competitors will begin a 1,000 foot climb out of the Gorge. The seven to eight mile run meanders over single-track trails and forest service roads passing through and around abandoned coalmines and tiny towns that once lined the river. The brave souls will then hop on a mountain bike and travel 11 miles on some of the most technical and scenic single-track trails in the east. This is truly-off-the-beaten-path racing at its finest!

The racers and their families and friends can take advantage of other activities in and around the New River Gorge. Whitewater rafting, mountain biking, climbing, rapelling, horseback riding, and kayak lessons with ACA certified instructors are just a few of the adventures offered by ACE, West Virginia's premier outfitter. We also have a full-service dining lodge and the Lost Paddle Lounge. ACE, as always, offers FREE camping to racers.

If you would rather stay in more comfy lodging, chalets and cabins are also available (be sure to reserve these early!). We welcome all who are brave enough to challenge the "Grand Canyon of the East" in this hard-core edition to the XTERRA American Tour. Good Luck!
