COURSE [ Course Map (Google) ]

Distance: 600 yard lake swim / 12 mile road bike / 5K road run

Swim // The swim course is a rectangle-shaped 600 yard clockwise swim with different start and exit points at the Maple Lake clubhouse. The water temperature is expected to be around 78 degrees, making the use of wetsuits optional; however, only a few participants wore wetsuits last year, and it will definitely not be necessary to invest in a wetsuit for this event. After a stair step swim exit from the lake, participants will run only about 50 yards to transition.

Bike // The bike course is an out-and-back 12 mile very challenging and somewhat technical ride that contains some moderately difficult rolling hills as well as a difficult very small gear climb on Smith Road in each direction. The pavement is good and the downhill portions of the course are not treacherous. In addition to the turnaround, there are four turns in each direction on the bike course. The bike entry and exit will be from the north end of the transition area and utilize the north side of the lake road.

Run // The 5K run is an out-and-back, two loop course from the south end of the transition area around the southern half of the lake on a paved road. Outside of where the road dips down behind the dam, the run course is very flat. Aide stations will be positioned at both turn around points on the run course.

Venue:

Maple Lake provides an outstanding venue for the event. The race start and finish and the transition area are all located at the Maple Lake clubhouse. The clubhouse area offers a great spectator view of the entire swim, bike entry and exit, most of the run, and the race finish. The clubhouse picnic area and shelter house provide a good area for the post race awards ceremony and a post race picnic that will include drinks, watermelon and cake, plus food that will be provided by Texas Roadhouse.

Parking:

Parking for participants, spectators and volunteers is provided by the nearby Maplewood Senior Living Community in their parking lots. The parking lot is located approximately one-half mile east from the Maple Lake clubhouse. Early arrival to the event is encouraged. Up until 8:00 a.m., participants, spectators and volunteers will be allowed to unload and quickly rack their bikes in transition, and then immediately proceed to the parking area. Shuttle vans will be available to bring participants back to the staging area. Shuttle vans will not transport bikes. Alternatively, participants may choose to ride their bikes on the main road or walk to the clubhouse on the path that connects the south side of the parking lot to the south side of the lake road. The Maple Lake entrance will be closed to traffic after 8:00 a.m. Following the race, people can make their own may back to the parking area.

About the Event:

On May 22, 2007, J. Cecil Jarvis, 58, died in a bicycle crash while on a training ride. Cecil was an extraordinary man who touched the lives of many people in North Central West Virginia. Cecil was an incredibly well-rounded person who achieved a balance of faith, family, friendship, and fitness in his life. His attributes included an innate sense of goodness, respect for all, humility, integrity, and humor.

A dedicated family man, Cecil was also an accomplished community leader, attorney, businessman, newspaper publisher, engineer, outdoorsman, and athlete. Cecil competed in over 20 marathons, including the Boston Marathon, and four Ironman triathlons (swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, run 26.2 miles). Cecil's "anything is possible" mentality was truly inspirational.

It is our belief that the J Cecil Jarvis Memorial Triathlon will not only help keep Cecil's memory alive, but it will also remind us that we all have the capability of improving and we all have the ability to make a difference in other people's lives.
