With the starting line spanning all four lanes of Kanawha Boulevard, runners leaped into action at the sound of the pistol firing. Moments later, the rains came as the mass of walkers started down the course. The walkers weren't even out of sight before Caleb Bowen clocked a 15:50.5. This 5K race doesn't see too many sub 16 minute finishes.
Matthew Brafford and Jason Pyles chased Bowen down the riverfront but finished 2 and 3 with a 16:03.6 and 16:15.8.

Focusing on the survivors' expressions as they approach the finish line was a real treat. When they heard their name called, some threw their arms in the air with pride. Others simply responded with a small wave and a grin that said, "its just little ole me." The survivors were led across the line by Sharon Iskra with a 24:44.6. She was followed by Suzanne Jene and Vivian Higgins with times of 27:28.7 and 27:33.9, respectively.
As the race progressed, more and more survivors crossed the line. The rain slowly moved on, giving way to a beautiful, sunny afternoon.
Many thanks go out to all of the volunteers. Special thanks to Rebecca Newhouse, Race Director and Susan G. Komen for the Cure West Virginia Affiliate President, who works so hard to make this event a continued success.
