Not the best way to start the race

It was another wild weekend of excitement, competition, cameraderie, and just plain fun. Mother Nature presented us with 2 beautiful days to carry on the spectacle known as the 24 Hours of Snowshoe. In a nutshell, teams and individuals who had spent months preparing for the race finally got to see their efforts pay off. Cane Creek (17 laps / 12:00:20) finally captured what they had been denied for the previous three years - 1st place in the Coed Pro/Am class while the Trek East Coast Factory (17 laps / 12:27:26) team overcame early mechanical problems to overtake Granny's Grandchildren (17 laps / 12:38:11) on the last lap for second. Absurd Circus (18 laps / 13:09:09) held off Da Bug (18 laps / 13:12:19) and Dung Beetle (18 laps / 13:29:14) for the Mens Expert win with only 20 minutes separating the three teams.

There are many stories and we'll try to bring them all to you over the next several days. While we try to be, omnipresent we aren't, but rest assured we're giving it all we have.

Just bear with us, because just like yourselves, we burned the midnight oil, taking pictures and keeping the scoring system in operation. I have to say that this was the hardest thing I have ever done. By the time it was over I was one huge body cramp, but with that said I was also exhilirated that I had done it. Our team, No Brains Racing, finished at a little better than half the field and so we were pleased with this because; 1. It was our 1st 24 hr race 2. No one quit and 3. We are old farts (our youngest rider is 42). As the rain had made most of the course a "hike-a-bike", we were actually recovering on the long climbs simply because you could get back on your bike. I am proud of my team members one of whom had 3 stints put in his heart only 2 years ago, another who battled a cold the entire race and the other, who although the oldest of our group at 45, turned out the best times. We were thankful for the incredible support of our wives and kids as they doted over us the entire race making sure every detail was attended to from food to dry clothing and cleaned up bikes. I was the final rider of our 4 member team and I will never forget finishing that final descent into the tents and seeing all of these friends yelling and calling my name with the realization that we could all say that we had done it. We had been a part of the greatest 24 hour race in America and our home state. Thanks to grannygear and everyone else involved for the fantastic memories.

I've only been riding (at all - not even as a kid) for 6 years now, and have done a few endurance races, but this past weekend, I went to that dark, scary place inside myself where I had to face everything that frightened me. The good news is, I survived it, and I feel I'm stronger for it. I was the last place solo female rider, but I finished, and I think it's important to recognize the people that made that happen for me.

1. Sue Haywood - I'm sure you don't remember what you did, but I sure do. On the way up to the Highwall, you rode past me as I was (once again) walking, and you patted me on the shoulder and said "Good job".
2. The wonderful lady at the top of the Highwall on my 4th and final lap Sunday afternoon - You told me I was your hero, and took my picture once I reached the summit.
3. The team rider in the bar Sunday night - You remembered me because I said "Thank you" when you told me I was doing a good job, and so many other riders had ignored your encouraging comments.
4. Jane Reynolds of Rapid Psychlers - You made my first lap more like a delightful trail ride with an old friend than a grueling race.
5. All the other riders, especially the other solo females - You're my inspiration.
6. Whoever put the blankets on me in the middle of the night on the trail - You saved me from freezing when I was too delirious to continue even walking, never mind trying to ride.
7. The many other spectators - Having you cheer for me, even though I had no chance of getting anywhere near the podium, gave me the strength to keep going when I thought I would surely die.
8. John Stamstad - You reminded me that just doing the race is an accomplishment in and of itself.
