Ready, set........
Although skies were cloudy and temperatures were brisk early this
morning, racers from across West Virginia headed to the FBI Criminal
Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division in Clarksburg for the
first annual Jerry Dove Memorial 5K Race. Organizers say the race was
very successful, drawing 236 participants this year. The race was
sponsored by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Recreation
Association (FBIRA), a non-profit organization which encourages
athletic, recreation and overall fitness activities among FBI
employees and the communities that they server.
Trophies were presented to the overall top three male and female
finishers. Those recipients are as follows: Men's Division - First
Place, Larry Taylor, Fayetteville, finish time - 15:32; Second
Place, Joey Herron, Fairmont, finish time - 18:09; and Third
Place, Billy Joe Peyton, Huntington, finish time - 18:20.
Women's Division - First Place, Sallie Beth Johnson,
Morgantown, finish time - 20:35; Second Place, Susan Verona,
Shinnston, finish time - 21:22; and Third Place, Heather King,
Fairmont, finish time - 22:35. Additionally, awards were presented to
the first three male and female finishers in six different age
brackets. (See age
group results for details.)

Big strides on the way to the finish
The 5K course was a double loop course with the start and finish both
on the FBI entrance road called Jerry Dove Drive, named in honor of
West Virginia native, Special Agent Jerry Dove. Agent Dove was killed
in the line of duty on April 11, 1986, during a shootout with two
serial bank robbers while assigned to the Miami Division.
Following the race, participants were provided with refreshments
donated by several area restaurants. In addition, local businesses
also donated items to be presented as door prizes during the awards
ceremony following the race.
