Saturday, May 17, 2003 -- Yellow Spring - Capon Valley, WV
[Coverage]
Yellow Spring, West Virginia MAY 17, 2003
Welcome to the fifth annual Capon Valley Run on our wonderful course of woodland trails filled with natural beauty. You will certainly enjoy our beautiful scenery and quiet country atmosphere. The course is hilly, and the footing is generally excellent. There are a number of stream crossings, and just a few rocky areas. Maps will be available on race day, and the entire trail will be clearly marked. There will be T-shirts for each runner, and we will have many first man and first woman awards including each age group (30, 40, 50 & 60 and over) along with many additional locally handcrafted special awards for the runners. No one under the age of 18 will be permitted to participate. TOILET FACILITIES with running water are available at the Ruritan Park. Outside SHOWERS are also available at the Ruritan Park. There will be plenty of snacks and drinks for the runners at the aid stations (approximately every 5 miles) and at the finish. There will be a free homemade barbecued chicken dinner for each runner after the race, and additional dinners may be purchased for $7 each. There is a country store, which has served our community for over 50 years…check it out…wonderful old country atmosphere. They have gas, ice, snacks, drinks, etc. LODGING: There is plenty of free flat parking for campers, along with a charming bed and breakfast within walking distance of the start. You could stay at our wonderful, historic Capon Springs Resort (see note below), or you can contact Barbara Silverman for more information about other available local lodging at concordoffice@citlink.net, phone: 304-874-4115. Our local lodging fills up fast. We’ll have breakfasts for purchase the morning of the race. NO VEHICLES will be permitted at the aid stations; however, transportation will be available for spectators, volunteers and for any runners unable to continue. We will carry marked bags to the aid stations as requested.

DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of I 66 and I 81: Go north on I 81 for 10 miles to exit 310, Turn left onto Route 37 (western by-pass around Winchester). Turn left on Route 50 and go west for 12 miles; Turn left on Route 259 and go south (green highway sign says to Wardensville) for 10 miles to Yellow Spring. Cross the cement bridge, and turn right on River Road (just past the post office and general store) to the Ruritan Park on the left (about ¼ mile). There is a sign for the Ruritan on Route 259, but it is difficult to see after dark. It is 100 miles and approximately 1¾ hours from D.C. on excellent roads with beautiful scenery. It would be a good idea to look at a map.
This year you can make your race a vacation at the Capon Springs & Farms Resort!
