Auggies Race
Racing in Wheeling, WV
A little wind and rain couldn't keep over 140 racers from the Wheeling, West Virginia Heritage Trail on Saturday morning. The participants gathered in honor of Auggie, a feline who is fondly remembered by race director Tom Rownd. Thanks to Tom, all of the proceeds from the annual Auggie's 5K Run and Walk go to benefit the programming and services of the Ohio Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Many familiar faces could be seen about the starting line. Among them was local runner, Ed Tullius of Moundsville, West Virginia. Ed has been listed in the top 5 finishers of many Wheeling 5K's over the years, and today was no different. Tullius took home first place honors with a time of 16:51. Dennis Delbert (17:41) of Ohio, and Paul Conaway (18:21) from Elizabeth, WV, rounded out the overall top spots.

Some wet trail running
For the women, it was Ohio runner Harriett Hunter who finished 9th overall and first for the ladies in 19:30. Shawna Zervos (23:11), and Judy Moore (23:14) swept second and third.

Wheeling, WV's best known walker Terry Whitecotton was the first to cross the line in the 5K walk. Whitcotton's time was 32:24. The top female walker also from Wheeling, Carolyn Hancock, finished 10th overall.

At post-race time folks celebrated with conversation, pizza, and soft drinks. Many prizes were awarded in the gym and a great time was had by all. Once again the Auggie's crew put on a fabulous race. Come wind, rain, or snow, this is one race that's sure to be fun no matter what. We'll see you next year.
