Saturday, July 18, 1998 marked the 20th Annual Huntington Bank Fairmont 5K and 10K run. The start for both races was simultaneously 9:00am, and the runners were off. The day was unbelievably hot, but frequent water stops and water sprinklers helped to diminish the effects of the heat. The course was different this year due to construction of the Nickel Bridge and the absence of Maryland Avenue. This made for a somewhat easier run this year since there were not as many hills. The awards were held at the 12th Street Public Pool. Runners could enjoy free swimming at the public pool and also at Wave Tech. Congratulations to Dave Evans from Cameron, WV, and to James Watkins from Fairmont, WV, for being the only runners to have participated in all 20 annual Huntington Bank Fairmont races.
