The rain didn't deter runners and walkers at the Hughes River Holiday 5K Road Race in Harrisville on Thursday evening. For the second year the the race was sponsored by the Ritchie County Middle/High School Track Boosters. The Boosters took over the race organization last year to provide a service to the community and to raise funds for the new all weather track at the school.

The evening began with a children's race in which fifty-one children between the ages of 3 and 9 ran a course of approximately one half mile. Nine year old Taylor Phillips crossed the finish line first with a time of 2:40.

This year ninety-one runners/walkers participated in the 5K race which is a challenging, certified loop course on paved and gravel streets in Harrisville. Jody Morgan, 17, of Sissonville finished first with a time of 17:39. He was followed by Josh Cotrill, 25, of Parkersburg and Mike Taylor, 42, of St. Marys. The first female finisher was Stephanie Meleady, 17, of Morgantown with a time of 21:32, followed by Lou Ann Cottrill, 44, of Parkersburg and Erin Hughes, 24, of Charleston

The Ritchie County Track Boosters would like to thank all the community, parent, and student volunteers who helped make the race a success.
