Friday evening before the race, the pre-registered runners enjoyed an all you can eat pasta bar located at RG's the Pizza Man restaurant. Runners enjoyed spaghetti, linguine, fettuccini, alfredo, ziti, salad, garlic bread, and a variety of beverages for dinner. Sounds good for a pre-race meal. Too bad I missed that one.
Saturday was a great day, cool and overcast, for a 15K race for the 74
runners. This is a challenging two-loop course that runs through the
streets of Fairmont with the start and finish at the Marion County
Adult Education Center.

Zack was still pleased with his time. He also showed some of his steeplechase skills by jumping the stone wall by the Marion County Adult Education Center to get back on course.
Coming in second place was Ron Weist from Clarksburg with a
time of 52:38. Ron has finished quite well the past couple of weeks;
finishing 3rd in the West Virginia Italian Heritage
5K last week and now 2nd place at the Run to Read 15K. Rounding
out the top three finishers was Greenwood, WV's Josh Sheets with
a time of 53:18.

The next race was the 5K Walk that started right after the 15K was finished. With 22 walkers, Mike Burns from Fairmont won with a time of 35:57. He was followed by the first female finisher, Sandra Oerly-Bennett with a time of 38:11. Third place overall was Cathy Tobrey of Fairmont with a time of 38:28. The second place male and fourth overall was Rudy Vincent with a time of 38:42.
For the shorter run, the 5K (another two-loop course), Zack's teammate
at WVU, Tyler DeVault of Fairmont led from the start with a
record time of 15:48. He improved his time from last weekend by 10
seconds and showed off for his hometown. Coming in second place was
Mathias Hickman of Fairmont with a time of 17:52. The third
place finisher was Michael Brosenne of Sheperdstown with a time
of 19:08.

Along with the 5K was the Kids Fun Run that was just one loop of the 5K race. The kids enjoyed the 1.5 mile loop race with trophies waiting for all the finishers.
The start of the 5K Walk was a nice little breather for the 20 runners
who ran in both the 15K and the 5K runs to complete the combined 20K.
Joey Herron of Fairmont won the combined competition with a
total time of 1:19:57. Following in a close second, just 14 seconds
behind, was Brosenne (1:20:11) who benefitted from his 3rd place
finish in the 5K. third-overall in the 5K. Rounding out the top
three was D.J. Navarini of Clarksburg with a total time of
1:20:36. The top three were very close with the average mile pace
between first and third just 3 seconds.

While waiting for the trophies, the runners looked for their name on the random prize list and enjoyed some great food. The runners enjoyed Papa John's pizzas, hot dogs and many other refreshments. And depending how hardy a runner or volunteer you were, you could enjoy a swim with a free pass for the city's Wave Pool in Fairmont.
Thanks to Jim Woolfitt, the generous race sponsors, and all the volunteers for making this a great race!!
