It was a warm spring morning that greeted runners as they gathered behind Glendale WV's Reynolds Memorial Hospital for the annual Webark 5K Run and Walk.

The event benefits Webark Estates, Inc. No-Kill Animal Shelter. A few events a year, such as this 5K, provide more than $10,000 annually to help Webark owners, Pam and Morgan Lacefield, take care of adoptable dogs, cats, and bunnies.

"It's our biggest fundraiser of the year." Pam Lacefield told The Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register reporter Shelly Hanson, noting that the race is the day before Easter this year.

"A lot of people will be in town visiting family, and this is a family event. There's plenty of good food, including pizza and baked goods." added Pam.

Everyone seemed in a good and energetic mood as they readied to tackle the 3.1 mile course that meandered through the local scenic neighborhood.

Dustin Meeker (in photo below) from Rayland Ohio finished first in the 2005 Webark 5K in 16:05. He also claimed the overall title in 2006 in 16:15.

This year Meeker returned to claim the course record and his third overall Webark win with a sub-16 minute time of 15:49.

The Blog Team That's What She Said reported, "Dusty dusted off the cobwebs, winning this race by over a minute in a new PR of 15:49. He said he had been feeling fatigued since Club Challenge and National Half, but he didn't let that deter him."

In the women's race for overall top spots Chrissy Lewis was also a repeat winner. She took first in 2009 with a time of 18:58 and in 2008 (19:45). This year she returned to reclaim her title as first place woman with a time of 19:18.

Sean Flanagan finished last year's race in 17:05 to take 4th place. This year Flanagen improved his place and time to finish 2nd overall in 16:58. Victor Porsenna finished 3rd in 18:43.

Alexa and Kristina Tomlan were vying for 2nd female overall, but it was Kristina who crossed the line in 2nd (20:35) ahead of Alexa (21:51).

Carl Kondrach was the first overall walker with a fast time of 29:50. Sherri Alig finished as the first woman in the walk in 33 minutes and 6 seconds.

People weren't the only participants in the race. Many runners and walkers brought their dogs along to join in. To name a few:

In addition to the event's many sponsors, timing was provided by George Frazier of the Ohio Valley Runners and Walkers Club. We extend a special thanks to them.

Another up-and-coming Webark fundraiser that people may donate items for is the Beast of a Sale yard sale. It will be held on May 1 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. held at:

First Christian Church
1200 Third Street
Moundsville, WV 26041

Webark's Race Director, Tom Rownd also hosts the Auggie's 5K in October. This year, the 12th annual Auggie's 5K Run and Walk will be held on October 16, 2010.

Like Webark, Auggie's also benefits the Ohio County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OCSPCA). Your pets are welcome at Auggie's too and you may race with them, but please have them leashed.
